Alice M. (Spencer) Kroskey

February 9, 1918 ~ January 14, 2020 (age 101)

Alice Marie Spencer Kroskey, or “A” as she was lovingly referred to by her late husband Joe, died on Tuesday, Jan. 14, at the age of 101.

Alice was born to Margaret Sievers and PA Spencer on February 9, 1918, in Indianapolis, and was the oldest of six children. From a young age, Alice was a caretaker and a no-nonsense, get things done, kind of woman. She married young and gave birth to her first two children, Bob and Billie. Although that marriage ended in divorce, Alice continued to take care of business and went to work as a telephone operator to provide for her family. She told many stories about taking several busses to get to her job, and somewhere along that route, she was spotted by a young man who had just returned from the war, and made it his next mission to woo and marry the pretty redhead divorcee with the cute kids. In 1946, Alice married Joseph Kroskey, and they had a third child, Joey.

Over the years, Alice has been given many roles in her life that she has enhanced by her sharp wit, her patience, her sense of fairness and her ability to tell it like it is without hurting someone’s feelings. Some of those roles include leader of the Lilly Lane Ladies club (which she founded in the early 1950s with her friends and neighbors), lifetime membership at St. Marks United Church of Christ and a graduate of the St. Stephens Ministries, and most recently President of the resident’s association at Bennett Place Assisted Living.  But, of all the groups she has participated in, the one she loved the best was her family – and she had many roles in quite a large family.

Alice is preceded in death by her parents, her brother Alden Spencer, her husband, Joe, son-in-law Michael Fetz Sr., and a great-grandchild. She is survived by her brother John Spencer, sisters Anna Breeden, Betty Whittinghill, and Margie Beeler; sons Bob (Rosalie) Nolan and Joe M. Kroskey, daughter Billie (Bill) Houghton, nine grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and 22 great-great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews and other family. She was a mother-figure to many, an early feminist example to her granddaughters, and a leader for just causes. We were so blessed to have her for nearly 102 years.

A Celebration of Alice’s life will be held at 11 AM Monday January 20, 2020 at the Oak Street Chapel of Naville & Seabrook Funeral Homes(1846 E. Oak St.) with entombment in SCI-Graceland Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 12 Noon – 4 PM Sunday and from 10 – 11 AM Monday before the service.

Memorial contributions may be given to St. Marks United Church of Christ.
