Col. Terry A. McCooe D.D.S.

March 7, 1950 ~ July 9, 2019 (age 69)

     Col. Terry A. McCooe D.D.S., age 69, passed away Tuesday July 9, 2019 at Norton Suburban Hospital in Louisville, KY.  He was born in New Albany, IN., and was the owner of the Coothbrush Dental Practice in Corydon, IN., and served as the State Dental Officer for the Indiana National Guard for 25 years.  

     Terry was a graduate of New Albany High School and went on to Wabash College where he was PHI BETA KAPPA in 1970. He received his Bachelor of Arts in Biology in 1972 from Indiana University Southeast(IUS), and his Doctorate of Dental Surgery in 1976 from the Indiana University School of Dentistry, and his Master’s Degree in Education/Counseling and Guidance in 1982 from IUS. He was a former Voluntary Probation Officer for the Clark Superior Court, a former Clinical Instructor for the University of Louisville School of Dentistry and a former Adjunct Professor of Human Anatomy at IUS.

     Terry was a devout Christian and was a member of the Charlestown Road Church of Christ. He was very proud of his Scottish Heritage:  Clan Mackay.  He was the winner of a National Poetry contest and was a Past President of the Historic Kiwanis Club of New Albany, IUS Alumni Association and the Southern Indiana Dental Association. Terry was awarded the Indiana University Chancellor’s Award and the Outstanding Alumni Award at IUS.  He was a member of the Mensa Society and was awarded a Vietnam Service Medal and the 1973 Commissioned Ensign in Navy Forces Health Professions Scholarship.  

      Colonel McCooe was a United States Navy Officer from 1973-1979 and a United States Army Officer from 1980-2018.  In 1976 as a Lieutenant at the US Navy JAX NAS Cecil Field NAS, he was selected to the JAX NAS base football, basketball and softball teams.  He was MEDRETES to Panama and The Marshall Islands for the Indiana National Guard. He was the Commander for the HQ Company 113th Medical Battalion, and Company F 38 MSB.  He received Presidential Recognition for service in Operation Enduring Freedom  and Operation Iraqi Freedom from George W. Bush.  He volunteered and served for 17 months with A Company 205th in the Middle East.  He completed the C4 Combat Casualty Care Course twice. He represented the National Guard as a lead forensic investigator for an American Airlines Plane Crash and on the nationally syndicated game show “The Weakest Link”. 

     Terry was preceded in death by his parents: Dorothy and David L. McCooe Jr.

His daughter: Kierce Jackson (Matt),

2 Sons: Brock McCooe (Meg) and Alex Reid (Tayler),

His brother: Gary L. “Snork” McCooe (Kelly),

And 6 Grandchildren: Xander, Mackai, Grey, Vivienne, Dallin and Max.

A celebration of Terry’s life will be held at 11 AM Saturday July 13, 2019 at the Charlestown Road Church of Christ (4601 Charlestown Road: New Albany, IN.) with full military honors.   Visitation will be at the Market Street Chapel of Naville & Seabrook Funeral Homes (1119 E. Market St.) from 3 – 8 PM Friday and from 9 – 11 AM Saturday at the church before the service.
