Obituary

Donald E. Gibbons, 87, a lifelong resident of New Albany passed away on Saturday at The Historic Villages of Silvercrest. He was born in New Albany to the late William and Edna Lee Taylor Gibbons. He was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church and served in the US Army as a Sergeant in Military Intelligence during the Korean War. Don worked in the financial field for over 58 years, most recently as a business consultant for Your Community Bank. He also served in different capacities for Bank One, Wel-Com Financial and as vice president of I.N.B Banking. He served on the New Albany City Council for 24 years and 4 years as Council President. Don also served the community as a member of several boards and committees: including the Board of Trustees of Floyd Memorial Health, Chairman of the board of Providence Retirement Home, Regional Board of Mercy Health Care Partners, New Albany City Planning Commission, Floyd County Sheriff’s Merit Board, the New Albany Police Merit Commission, Floyd County Community Action Agency, New Albany Board of Works, the Graves YMCA,  Executive Secretary of the Flood Control District, Indiana Association of Cities and Towns Executive Committee, Salvation Army Board of Advisors in connection with the FEMA  Board of Floyd, Clark and Harrison Counties, he was a member and served on the Board of Directors of the former New Albany Country Club, Honorary Directorship of Harvest Homecoming, Kiwanis Club of Historic New Albany, Lifetime member of the ELKS Lodge #270, member of the Special Allocations Committee for the Metro United Way and member of the Government Affairs Committee with the Southern Indiana Chamber of Commerce.  He was preceded in death by his parents and his Aunt: Eda Mae Taylor.  The family would especially like to extend our heartfelt appreciation to the caregivers at the Villages of Silvercrest for their care and concern for Don during his time there as well as his very kind sitters-Cara, Joan, Kathy, Nancy, Katrina and his great friend Dan.

Survivors include his wife of 67 years:  Joyce Ann Jaegers Gibbons; His 3 daughters:  Melanie Koetter(Jack), Leaha McCrite(Pat) and Patricia Adkins(Gerry), 6 Grandchildren: Zachary McCrite(Brittany), Alexandra Glotzbach(Justin), John Brage Koetter(Allison), Maxwell McCrite(Zynthia), Jack Gibbons Koetter(Catherine) and Samuel Adkins,10 Great Grandchildren and 1 on the way.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 AM Saturday December 28, 2019 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church with entombment in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery.  Visitation will be at the Market Street Chapel of Naville & Seabrook Funeral Homes(1119 E. Market St.) from 12 Noon – 8 PM Friday.

Memorial Contributions may be given to Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, Providence High School or St. Elizabeth’s.
