Gary L. Austin

February 17, 1940 ~ May 4, 2019 (age 79)


GARY L. AUSTIN, 79, passed away Saturday May 4, 2019.  He was born in Anderson, IN. 

He was a graduate of New Albany High School(NAHS) in the Class of 1957, and went on to graduate with his B.S. from Indiana State University and his M.S. from Indiana University.  Gary spent his entire 36 year educational career at New Albany High School where he was a teacher, coach and athletic director(AD). 

While AD, Gary was elected and served six years on the board of the Indiana Interscholastic Athletics Administrators Association. He received their Charles F. Maas Distinguished Service Award and was named Athletic Director of the Year from the C.I.U. in 1991.  Gary was recognized by the Indiana Soccer Association as one of the six state-wide AD’s who advised the IHSAA to bring soccer under the IHSAA umbrella in 1994.  He was inducted into the NAHS Hall of Fame in 2011 and he was a member of the Valley View Golf Club. 

Among all of Gary’s accomplishments, and as his many friends can attest to, he was a Prankster and a Jokester extraordinaire.  

He was preceded in death by his parents: Leon and Eudora Austin, his sister: Melanie Leet, and his in-laws: Dee and Tony Rutter. 

Survivors include his wife of 59 years:  Gerry Austin,

his daughter: Teri A. Briscoe and her husband Doug,

and his granddaughter: Taylor A. Schmitt and her husband Michael.

A Gathering of Family and Friends will be held from 1 – 7 PM Saturday May 18, 2019 at the Market Street Chapel of Naville & Seabrook Funeral Homes(1119 E. Market St.)
