Joyce Ann Tackett Melhiser, 79, passed away Sunday, June 23, 2019 at Providence Retirement Home, New Albany, Indiana.
Joyce was born on February 28, 1940 to Lubie E. and Margaret (Von Allmen) Tackett in New Albany, Indiana. Joyce was a National Honor Society student and graduated from New Albany High School in 1958. After high school she worked for Travelers Insurance in Louisville for several years and then in the personnel department at Clark County Hospital. She married Norman Melhiser on February 20, 1959 at Silver Street U.M. Church and was a long-time member there where she sang in the Chancel Choir and made the communion bread. She later attended Atkins Chapel U.M. Church and Shepherd’s Heart Ministry where her brother, Dennis Tackett, was pastor. Joyce was a member of the Washington C. Depauw United Charities, a member of the Dayspring Emmaus Community, taught cake decorating to 4-H clubs, a member of several Bunco clubs, and appointed a Kentucky Colonel.
Joyce was most famously known for her delicious and beautiful wedding cakes. Through her business of 30 years, Cakes By Joyce, she delighted everyone with her cake and flower creations, and won many awards. She studied cake decorating with instructors from Canada, England, South Africa, and Australia. In 1983, Joyce won a Gold Medal and “Best of Show” in the Wedding Cake Division of the Queen City – Cincinnati Cake Show sponsored by The Wilton Co., Chicago, Illinois. Also, in 1983 she won the Sweepstakes Award at the Indiana State Fair. She won “Best of Show” for her cakes for four years in a row, from 1989 to 1992, at the Kentucky State Fair. Her sugar paste flowers won her “Best of Show” in the art category of the Mid-America Orchid Congress in 1989 and in 1991. In 2009 she was honored and named “Artist of the Year” by the Southern Indiana Arts Council.
In addition to her cake decorating expertise, Joyce excelled in and enjoyed cross stitching, sewing, gourmet cooking, gardening, calligraphy, and decorating for Christmas. Her beautiful smile, joyful and giving spirit, and love for life and celebrating will be missed by all.
Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, Lubie and Margaret Tackett, and two brothers, Victor and Douglas Tackett. She is survived by her loving family, husband of 60 years, Norman L. Melhiser, CPA, three children, Vicki Williamson (Dan), Sellersburg, IN, Angela Grant (Jerry), Goshen, KY, and Michael Melhiser (Melissa), New Albany, IN. Five grandchildren, Andrew Grant (Kristin), Chesapeake, VA, Katherine Grant Meisburg (Jack), Goshen, KY, Danielle and Jordan Williamson, Sellersburg, IN, and Olivia Bucci, New Albany, IN, and one great grandchild, Beau Meisburg. One brother, Dennis Tackett (Marty), Pensacola, Fl, two nephews, Victor Tackett, Jr. and Paul Tackett, and four nieces, Elizabeth Suiter, Emily Meneely, Jessica Shivers, and Nell Durbin.
A Celebration of Joyce’s life will be held at 11 AM Thursday June 27, 2019 at Silver Street United Methodist Church(413 Silver St.) with burial in SCI-Graceland Memorial Park. Visitation will be at the Market Street Chapel of Naville & Seabrook Funeral Homes(1119 E. Market St.) from 1 – 8 PM Wednesday and from 10 – 11 AM Thursday at the church before the service.
