Stuart Newbanks, 88, passed peacefully on May 14, 2019. A life-long resident of New Albany, IN, he attended S. Ellen Jones Elementary and was a graduate of New Albany High School, class of 1948. He became an eagle scout, attended Purdue University and obtained his Bachelor’s degree in Business from Indiana University, class of 1952.
Stuart was in the Far East Command of the US Army from 1952-1954, based in Seoul and Tokyo, and received the Korean Service Ribbon, the United Nations Service Medal and National Defense Service Medal upon honorable discharge. He worked for 33 years until 1989 for Community First Federal Savings and Loan Association, New Albany, where he served in numerous capacities including Director, Executive Vice President and Board Secretary. Long active in numerous professional organizations, he was a National Director of the Institute of Financial Education of the Savings and Loan Industry 1975-1979, where he was awarded the prestigious Arthur H Raderer Award in 1991. He was, among many others, a career member and later President of the Louisville Chapter of the American Savings and Loan Institute 1962-63, a Board Director of the New Albany Chamber of Commerce from 1980-1983, and was named as a Kentucky Colonel in 2008.
Stuart had a passion for serving the Lord, and for many years supported Christian ministry through leadership with the Dayspring Emmaus Community, both in leading and serving over the years on multiple Walks, as well as sharing the word of God to others through numerous church and prison ministries. He was an active member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church in Floyds Knobs, Indiana. He was also an avid reader, and enjoyed morning coffee in his lazy boy recliner reading the current edition of the Wall Street Journal while listening to classical music.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Constance (Ashley) Newbanks, originally from Aiken, South Carolina; children Amy Newbanks Letke of New Albany, Mark Newbanks (Nigel Ashworth) from London, England, and John Newbanks of New Albany; grandchildren William Letke, Kyle Letke, David Newbanks and Sarah Newbanks.
Stuart is preceded in death by his parents Arthur Hamilton Sr. and Florence Feallock Newbanks, brother Arthur “Bud” Newbanks, sister Elizabeth (Betty) Geddes of Aiken, S.C. and infant sister Sarah Newbanks.
Visitation will be on Sunday, May 19 from 2:00 p.m-7:00 p.m. at Naville & Seabrook(1119 E Market Street, New Albany, IN) and Monday, May 20 from 9:00 a.m.-10:00 a.m. at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church(2100 US-150, Floyds Knobs IN.) The Reverend Tony Alstott will officiate a “Celebration of Life” service in Stuart’s honor on Monday, May 20, 10:00 a.m. at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church.
